Great question - we get it all the time!  

In the new and updated February 2022 official Missionary Handbook under “Guidelines for Elders” it says that socks should be "simple in color and design and should not distract others from your message." 

Some people choose to interpret that to their own liking, which is their prerogative - and we totally respect that!   Many missions do allow our socks.  We've even had mission presidents get them for every missionary in their mission!
